Mark Zuckerberg, CEO, Meta running in January 2025 and moved to axe its fact checkers on Facebook and Instagram, leaving users questioning the accuracy of posts.
“ It’ s time to get back to our roots around free expression. We’ re replacing fact checkers with Community Notes, simplifying our policies and focusing on reducing mistakes,” Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg shared in a video posted by Meta on 7th January 2025.

“ We’ re going to work with President Trump to push back on governments around the world that are going after American companies and pushing to censor more”

This echoed a‘ community notes’ strategy that X( formerly Twitter) has adopted to create greater freedom of expression, according to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Trump is close with X owner Elon Musk, having appointed him to co-lead his planned Department of Government Efficiency( DOGE) advisory board. The board is tasked with removing regulations in order to reduce cost and increase government efficiency.
Mark Zuckerberg also suggested that Meta’ s third-party moderators were“ too politically biased” – a comment which echoes Trump’ s opinions of social media control, having previously referred to Meta’ s fact-checking policy as censorship.
The CEO also hit out against Europe, suggesting the continent“ has an ever increasing number of laws institutionalising censorship, making it difficult to build anything innovative there.”
The European Commission rejected such an assertion in January 2025, stating that EU data laws do not censor social media.
