As smartphone companies increasingly turn towards the automotive sector as the next competitive frontier , beleaguered smartphone manufacturer Huawei is accelerating its push to diversify beyond its handset business .
In a recent reshuffle of its top leadership positions , the company named Richard Yu - who previously had a brief stint as the head of Huawei ’ s Cloud and AI business - as the CEO of its newly-created Smart Car Solutions unit . Currently , the unit makes smart car components , but Yu - who is largely credited with the success of Huawei ’ s smartphone business prior to its blacklisting by the US government - has more ambitious targets , starting with a goal of selling 300,000 cars in 2022 .
Yu has a master ' s degree from Tsinghua University . He joined Huawei in 1993 and has served in a number of roles , including 3G Product Director and Chief Strategy & Marketing Officer .
