THE TELCO INTERVIEW
Regulation and resistance eSIM adoption rates vary across regions due to differences in regulations. Europe’ s“ Roam Like at Home” policy for instance, which caps roaming surcharges, limits the demand for alternative eSIM solutions.
“ That’ s why the need for buying SIM cards isn’ t as aggressive as in other regions where roaming is still very expensive,” observes Tarek.
In other regions, regulatory uncertainty and KYC requirements are slowing the adoption of eSIM.“ I see strong pushback from legal and regulatory teams when it comes to eSIMs due to their not being clearly defined regulations or legal frameworks,” Tarek explains.“ They’ re cautious because the concept is still very new and they worry there might be unknown risks.”
However, he remains optimistic.“ These aren’ t blockers, they’ re transitional challenges,” he adds.
Connectivity integration across travel and fintech The travel and financial sectors present significant opportunities for eSIM integration. Tarek envisions connectivity as an essential component of the traveller’ s journey, alongside accommodation and transportation.
