THE TELCO INTERVIEW
“ VODAFONE IOT’ S JOURNEY IN THE AMERICAS REALLY BEGAN WHEN WE RECOGNISED THAT US BUSINESSES WERE LOOKING FOR PARTNERS WHO COULD DELIVER GLOBAL SCALABILITY”
Phil Skipper, Head of Strategy, Vodafone IoT
end-to-end encryption to safeguard data and prevent unauthorised access,” Phil confirms. The seamless experience extends to integrating next-generation technologies, such as non-terrestrial networks.“ Being able to seamlessly transition from one to another – as we do with terrestrial networks – allows us to treat satellites as just another connectivity option. So, customers get the great advantages without having to deal with the technical complexity – this is our job.”
The future: AI and hypersmart innovation Looking ahead, the prediction is that the pace of change will accelerate, driven by the convergence of several powerful technologies. Phil explains the trajectory will result in a“ new surge in IoT applications and use cases,” propelled by innovations like eSIMs that allow customers“ to simplify their production process by being able to select their carrier over the air.” He highlights iSIMs that
“ will enable even smaller IoT devices to be developed,” alongside nonterrestrial networks for back-up connectivity and finally, the transformative impact of AI.
The convergence will create a new paradigm for connected devices.
“ For IoT, AI is coming at a critical point as high-resolution video and edge compute are maturing fast,” Phil explains.
“ The combination of these technologies – along with AI – enables a new breed of hypersmart devices that use video and AI video processing to perform highly complex sensing, measuring and detection in a totally new way.“ These new hypersmart devices, using‘ sight as a sensor,’ will enable a single device to detect, record, and manage a far wider range of inputs. I think we are about to witness a new breed of IoT devices for a new generation of digitally connected businesses.”
