Abby adds:“ Telecom networks consume a huge amount of power and it’ s not going to go down. In terms of consumption, everyone has got multiple devices – this can be intangible for a lot of people because it’ s in the cloud, people don’ t think it has a footprint, but it does.
“ I think there’ s a lot of work to be done and I think that evolution is going to come really fast.”
Steps to reach sustainability targets In addition to strategy, telcos can work to be more sustainable by using renewable energy to reduce energy consumption. Using greener energy is environmentally responsible and can also be more cost effective.
Likewise, telcos can use technologies like AI or other hardware to optimise their data centres. This also includes managing equipment lifecycles by maintaining and upgrading hardware when required.
Investing in mobile infrastructure or fibre networks can also help services run more efficiently. As the 5G rollout continues at pace, greater efficiencies

“Great strides have also been made in tackling energy efficiency across wider RAN architecture through Massive MIMO and network virtualisation”
